IAS conveys its heartiest congratulations to IAS Si Yuan Professor, Prof. Gunther UHLMANN and IAS Senior Visiting Fellow, Prof. John HARDY from the University College London for being awarded doctor honoris causa from the University of Helsinki, by the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Medicine respectively, to recognize their academic achievements in the field.

The honorary degree is the highest accolade granted by the University of Helsinki. Its conferment ceremony is one of the most unique of its kind with traditions of over three-centuries old since the Middle Ages. The honorary degree recipients are invited to a three-day celebration comprising sword-whetting dinner, conferment ceremony, mass at cathedral, gala dinner and excursion. This ritual has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage in Finland since 2017.
