Prof. David ATIENZA ALONSO

IAS Senior Visiting Fellow
Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)

Research Areas:
Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge AI Computing Architectures Design, Embedded Systems Design, 2D/3D Thermal Modeling and Management for Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoc), Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Smart Wearables and Medical Systems, Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSN) and Smart Wearables, Memory Optimizations, Low-Power Hardware and Software Co-Design, Embedded Machine Learning

Prof. David Atienza Alonso received his MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain and IMEC in Belgium, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. He is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Head of the Embedded Systems Laboratory, and Associate Vice President of Research Centers and Platforms at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Previously, he was the Scientific and Executive Director of the EcoCloud Sustainable Computing Center of EPFL from 2021 to 2024.

Prof. Atienza Alonso’s research interests include system-level design methodologies for high-performance multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC) and low-power Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems, including new 2-D/3-D thermal-aware design for MPSoCs and many-core servers, ultra-low power edge AI architectures for wireless body sensor nodes and smart embedded systems, HW/SW reconfigurable systems, dynamic memory optimizations, and network-on-chip design. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, and as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computing Surveys, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing, and ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems, to name a few.

Prof. Atienza Alonso also served as the President of IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation in 2018-2019. He is currently the Chair of the European Design Automation Association, and a Fellow of IEEE and of ACM.
