The Bright Sheng Partnership: Composers Meet Performers in Hong Kong

Overview

The Intimacy of Creativity, the internationally-acclaimed, annual two-week Partnership devoted to promoting an intimate dialogue between composers and performers hosted by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), returns to Hong Kong 23 April – 6 May, 2012 for its exciting second season. Selected composers will present and revise their chamber music compositions after in-depth discussions between composers and performers during on-campus Open Discussions. The revised compositions will be formally presented at Preview Concerts at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art Hall on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and World Premiere Concerts at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre.

Artistic Director and internationally-renowned composer, conductor, and pianist, Bright Sheng, will be joined by Distinguished Guest Composer/Artist and Grammy® Award-winning violinist and composer, Mark O'Connor; Distinguished Guest Composer and Grawemeyer Award-winning composer and pianist, Joan Tower; Special Guest Artist and 2009 International Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold Medal winner, Haochen Zhang; Special Guest Artist and 2004 International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition First Prize-winner, Trey Lee (presented in collaboration with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra); Ensemble-in-Residence, the critically acclaimed Santa Barbara, CA-based Camerata Pacifica; Special Guest Composer and Canto-pop star, Jonathan Wong; and Guest Artist.

Up to six emerging composers between the ages of 25 and 35 will be selected to participate. One or two participating composers may be offered a one-year renewable position at HKUST in the Division of Humanities.

The Intimacy of Creativity is proud to continue its media partnership with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) for the 2012 season. IC2012 will also be presented in collaboration with the celebrated Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
