On Non-scattering Wave Numbers

Abstract

The speaker and her research group examine necessary conditions for an inhomogeneous medium to permit non-scattering wave numbers, that is wave numbers for which there exist incident waves that render this medium invisible. Non-scattering wave numbers are subset (possibly empty) of the transmission eigenvalues.

They show that the existence of non-scattering wave numbers, unlike the existence of transmission eigenvalues, generically implies a certain regularity of the inhomogeneity.

The speaker and her research group investigate this question for a large class of inhomogeneities. This talk is based on joint works with Michael VOGELIUS and XIAO Jingni.

About the Speaker

Prof. Fioralba CAKONI obtained her BS and MS from the University of Tirana in 1987 and 1990 respectively. She then completed her PhD in Mathematics in 1996, jointly between the University of Tirana and the University of Patras. She was a Lecturer at the University of Tirana in 1996-1998 and a Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Stuttgart in 1998-2000. She then moved to US to join the Department of Mathematics of the University of Delaware, where she was promoted from Postdoctoral Researcher to Assistant Professor, to Associate Professor and later to Full Professor. In 2015, she joined the Rutgers University and is currently a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics.

Prof. Cakoni’s research interests include inverse problems, partial differential equations, integral equations, and inverse scattering theory. She is on the editorial board of several journals including La Matematica, Proceedings of the Royal Society A, Differential and Integral Equations and SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis to name a few. She has also authored four books on inverse scattering theory.

Prof. Cakoni was elected the Simons Fellow in Mathematics in 2016 and the Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2019. She is also a Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania.
