New Results on Axions and ALPs
Abstract
The speaker will first introduce the concept of axions and ALPs (axion-like-particles) and present a general overview of theoretical and experimental aspects of the field. Then, she will demonstrate that the true QCD axion that solves the strong CP problem can be found in all generality outside the customary standard QCD band, in spite of QCD being the sole source of Peccei-Quinn breaking. A novel and exact sum rule for the QCD axion will be presented. The results imply that any ALP experiment which finds a signal located to the right of the standard QCD axion band can be solving the strong CP problem within QCD, with additional associated signals to be found within a well-defined area of parameter space.
About the Speaker
Prof. Belén Gavela is currently a full professor of Theoretical Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), and a member of IFT-UAM/CSIC (Institute for Theoretical Physics) of which she is a founding member. Her research interests focus mainly on phenomenology of particle physics, using as preferred tool effective field theories. She has worked in particular on Higgs physics, neutrino physics and at present on axion and ALP (axion-like-particle) physics.
