2014 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences - Jean Tirole: Man of Economics

Abstract

When asked if it was difficult to choose a winner for the award in 2014 in an interview, Tore Ellingsen, Chairman of the Committee for the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, replied, “It’s been clear for some time now that Jean Tirole is a worthy recipient, but the question has been for what, alone or with whom, and when”. Tirole is a polymath like Paul Samuelson in the 20th century. The case of Tirole is particularly rare in the modern age when economics has undergone a high degree of specialization of fields. He published more than 200 articles with high quality and 12 books (including one in progress) in economics, finance and psychology. He has been influential in the theoretical and practical applications ranging from game theory, contract theory and economics of information to industrial organization and regulation, macroeconomics, finance and psychology. The speaker will share with audience who Jean Tirole is, what have been achieved by him, and what is special about his works in economics and social sciences.
