Reducing the Harms from Opioids, Tobacco, and Other Addictions: A Cross-Country Perspective

Abstract

Opioid addiction and tobacco smoking are major public health concerns in the U.S., Hong Kong, and globally, with a sharp increase in opioid-related deaths in recent years. Effective control policies are crucial to address these challenges. In this lecture, Prof. Kenkel will share his experiences as a scholar and policy maker to shed light on opioids and tobacco research and policy.

About the Speaker

Prof. Donald Kenkel is an Andrew Dickson White Professor at Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy of Cornell University. His expertise is in health economics and public sector economics, with a focus on the economics of disease prevention and health promotion. Prof. Kenkel has conducted extensive research on public health policies, including alcohol and cigarette taxes, advertising for smoking cessation, and the economics of tobacco regulation. He has published his research in several journals, including the Journal of Political Economy and the Journal of Health Economics. Prof. Kenkel is a former President of the Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis and served as Senior Economist and then Chief Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President in the US from 2018 to 2020.
