Overview
The new age of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has transformed structural biology by enabling the structures of mega complexes, that are vital to every living system, to be determined at atomic resolution. Cryo-EM technology has continued to revolutionize research in life sciences in terms of making major strides in acquiring basic scientific knowledge, as well as understanding and combating human diseases.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established the first world-class Biological Cryo-EM Center in Hong Kong, housing a series of high-end cryo-EM facilities allowing local scientists to access this cutting-edge technology. However, training local cryo-EM experts is critical for capitalizing on this rapidly developing advanced technology. To bridge this gap, this symposium serves as a platform for local scientists in the fields of structural biology, medicine and materials science to become acquainted with cryo-EM technology and to exchange knowledge and ideas with international cryo-EM experts. It aims to foster cross-institutional collaborations and multidisciplinary research for the advancement of biology and health in Hong Kong.
The organizers target to achieve these goals:
-
Strengthening the local structural biology community in Hong Kong;
-
Connecting to international cryo-EM community;
-
Training local researchers.
