Overview

This IAS Seminar Series on Big Data aims to bring distinguished researchers from academia and industry to HKUST to share their knowledge and expertise with colleagues and students from all four schools. By bringing in speakers whose expertise transcends area boundaries and who are likely to attract a wide audience, we intend to connect faculty members from different schools, which hopefully will lead to interdisciplinary activities in Big Data.

With the growing availability of large, unstructured and complex datasets in a range of critical areas of human activity both online and offline (health, finance, business, social science, entertainment, sports, etc.), the task of collecting, organizing, and analyzing Big Data has emerged as an exciting challenge, requiring applications of methodologies from diverse disciplines. At HKUST, we have many faculty members from various schools with expertise and interest in specific aspects of the processing, management, visualization, modeling, analyzing and interpretation of large and complex datasets. As the university's premier platform for promotion of cross-disciplinary interaction and collaboration, the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study is a natural home for efforts to bring these different interests together to develop synergy and novel research strategies to meet Big Data challenges.
